The Galway Early Music Festival, May 12-15 puts women to the fore in an imaginative programme for 2016, highlighting women as musicians, composers, patrons of medieval, renaissance and baroque music.

WHEN GEORGE Frideric Handel was writing and casting his play Radamisto in 1720, he intended the title role to be performed by Francesco Bernardi, the singer better known as Senesino. However, when Senesino became unavailable, Handel gave that male role to Margherita Durastanti instead.

GENDER-BENDING baroque opera singers, 12th century love songs, and young musicians playing music from centuries ago, not to mention women's contribution to European music - it's the 2016 Galway Early Music Festival.

FINGHIN COLLINS may declare himself "a musician first and then a pianist", but there is no doubting either his magnificent as a player, or his view of the piano being "a very complete instrument", as he will display in his upcoming Galway concert. Yet his love of, and interest in, other instruments, is genuine, particularly one that is somewhat under appreciated in classical music - the voice.
